Futuresource Perspectives - From Big Screen to Buy Button: The Overlapping Cinema & Transactional Audience

This Perspectives report is part of the new Futuresource Screen Trends service and this latest piece explores how cinema and digital transactional viewing no longer sit in separate lanes; instead, they now operate as a fluid, overlapping ecosystem where consumer engagement spans both the big screen and the living room. As theatrical windows shorten and audiences increasingly shift between formats, a growing group of customers are proving to be the most active across the movie lifecycle.

This report explores the dynamics behind this overlap, revealing how behaviours, formats and audience segments interact to shape the next phase of market growth.

How are the global cinema and transactional markets performing?

Both markets returned to stability and growth in 2025, with global box office rising to around $33 billion and digital transactional reaching nearly $8 billion. Forecasts for 2026 indicate further growth of 9% for cinema and 7% for transactional, driven by stronger film slates and increased demand for premium experiences.

The overlap continues to expand. Futuresource’s Living with Digital data shows that 24% of consumers now engage with both cinema and transactional video, up from 19% in mid‑2024. Levels vary by country, reaching 37% in the UK and 35% in the US. These dual‑format users are the highest‑value segment, contributing roughly $10 billion to the combined $41 billion 2025 market.

Adults aged 26 to 45 show the strongest participation across both cinema and digital transactional formats, extending the commercial life of films across windows. Older audiences aged 46 and above remain under engaged largely because of perceived complexity rather than lack of interest. Simplifying their viewing journey and clarifying value could unlock significant growth.
