The Controller is the Next Battleground in Direct View LED

New research from Futuresource Consulting forecasts a $693 million market by 2029, but brands without proprietary control architecture face challenge to differentiate.

As LED display manufacturing becomes focused around a shrinking supply chain, the competitive dynamics of the Direct View LED market are undergoing a decisive shift. Module boards and cabinets are increasingly commoditised, which means the differentiation that brands can own, and the margin they can protect, is moving into the control layer.

That’s one of the central findings of new research from Futuresource Consulting. The firm’s LED Video Wall Controller Market report analyses and forecasts the global LED controller market across system architectures, the competitive landscape and vertical market dynamics.

A fast-growing market and a structural shift

Futuresource valued the global LED video wall controller market at $316 million in 2024, and expects growth of 14% in 2025, to achieve $360 million, once all the data is finalised. With forecasts of 17% CAGR through to 2029, the market is on track to reach $693 million.

Alongside this growth, the underlying LED technology is undergoing a structural shift. At pixel pitches of 2.6mm and below, packageless CoB and CoG technologies are projected to represent two-thirds of global Direct View LED market value by the end of the decade, displacing packaged formats such as SMD and IMD that have driven growth for the past two decades.

“The global Direct View LED market is reaching a turning point,” says Ted Romanowitz, Principal Consultant at Futuresource Consulting. “As the market consolidates, brands need to show clear value in the verticals they serve. Those that can’t differentiate will find it harder to grow and stay competitive. And increasingly, that battle comes down to the LED controller.”

The strategic choice between third-party and proprietary routes

Third-party controllers currently account for 84.5% of global LED controller market value, with Novastar and Colorlight together commanding nearly three-quarters of that segment. These solutions meet the baseline requirements for a viable LED controller, including optical calibration, pixel mapping, HDR, refresh and scan rates, and related core functions. However, their broad availability across competing brands is creating homogenisation, and eliminating the ability to differentiate on control capability alone.

As a result, eight brands have responded by engineering proprietary controllers exclusive to their own product lines. This group, which includes Aoto, Christie Digital, LG, Planar, Samsung, Sharp, Sansi North America and Sony, achieves meaningful differentiation through system architecture choices that third-party options can’t replicate.

“Architecture is a critical choice that cannot be overlooked,” says Marques Girardelli, Associate Consultant, Futuresource Consulting. “By differentiating features, you’re baking in brand loyalty and supporting ASP uplift, whether that’s through AI-driven processing, virtual production capability, managed services or advanced calibration.”

Vertical markets demand tailored solutions

The report analyses differentiating capability across eight key vertical markets; namely retail, corporate & education, control room, broadcast, transportation, hospitality & leisure, stadiums & venues, and media & advertising. Each imposes distinct requirements around redundancy, image quality, manageability, security and workflow integration. The report maps which controller capabilities address each vertical, and where the revenue and margin opportunity is most concentrated.

The report also examines five broader pro AV trends, focusing on processing performance, simplicity & ease of use, manageability & managed services, sustainability & total cost of ownership, and cybersecurity. Each represents both a customer pain point and a product differentiation lever for brands willing to engineer a response into their control architecture.
