The broadcasting industry continues to grapple with a slowdown in production of both live / nonlive TV, as well as advert production in 2024. In early 2024, there were hopes the resolution of the WGA & SAG-AFTRA Hollywood Strikes at the end of 2023 would serve as a Hail Mary for the industry, but no such surge in demand has been realised. These issues have been exacerbated by wider macro economic issues, including inflation, unfavourable exchange rates and global trade tensions. 

IFA brought much of the European consumer electronics industry to the Berlin Messe in September, where the show celebrated its 100th year. Futuresource analysts returned to the show floor, attending press events and product demonstrations, and meeting with exhibitors and attendees. 

Enthusiasm persisted across Professional AV categories at InfoComm despite a sluggish start to 2024. The general sentiment across brands and channel partners was hopeful optimism: first half revenues may have been lower than anticipated, but there is hope for improvement in the second half of the year. 

Recent convergence between Pro AV and the broadcast media sector has opened new opportunities for vendors. However, rising costs in Las Vegas and growing concerns about ethical travel and the environment have led some brands to reconsider if NAB is the best place for their resources.

CES continues to expand as one of the world’s largest consumer technology shows. The 2024 event saw 4,300 exhibitors showcasing advancements across the sector to a reported audience of 135,000 attendees worldwide. 

Futuresource’s video acquisition trackers continue to indicate a healthy market despite challenges for the industry, and this was reflected by the atmosphere at the show. IBC 2023 appeared to host more new product launches than any of the recent international tradeshows as we emerge from the pandemic era.

IFA 2023 saw the return to a fully international, physical event. Following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year saw no health or travel restrictions in place, which impacted Asian visitors in particular during IFA in 2022. 

The AV industry is showing strong signs of recovery, and innovation is returning, but software is critical to unlocking pent-up demand. The lower footfall demonstrates the slow return to normality for the sector.

Apple’s 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) carried greater speculation this year than most, with rumours surrounding its launch into the immersive hardware space having been present for much of 2023.
